Costalegre Fishing Packages and Accomodations
All of the boats we offer include a somewhat English-speaking Captain, 7 hours fishing (6 on the "Karena") with all fishing tackle, live bait (if necessary), a cooler with ice and drinks (water, sodas & beer) and fishing licenses. Our captains will also filet your catch for you and give you your fish in basic plastic bags. It is recommended that if you'd like to keep some fish to take home with you that you provide ziplock bags. Please note that airlines will NOT take Styrofoam coolers and if you plan on bringing fish home with you'll need to provide a real cooler, ziplock bags and duct tape to secure the cooler. Tips are not included, we recommend 10% to 15% of the charter price, but it is totally up to you. We recommend catch and release of fish you do not intend on keeping for personal use. We do not sell our catch, nor do we recommend giving it away to strangers, other than a fish or two for your captain.

Mounting Your Catch
Many people like to have their fish mounted in order to have something to remember it by. Not all people mount billfish (Marlin & Sailfish), many prefer to mount smaller species such as Dorado, Roosterfish, Wahoo and Tuna as well. These species are much smaller, taking up less wall space and are of course considerably less expensive to mount than a full sized billfish. Furthermore, you do not need to decide at the time of your catch, whether or not you'd like to have it done. You can actually order one later on, upon your return back to port, or even once you've arrived back home. This is because all fish mounts out of areas such as Mexico nowadays are mold mounts, exact size replicas of your fish, manufactured in the USA. They are more realistic-looking, weigh a whole lot less and last forever (no rotting). It has been this way for many years now, despite what boat owners / Captains tell you.
All billfish should be released, as well as any fish you do not wish to keep for personal use, in order to protect our fishery. We'd like to be catching fish here for a long time to come. There are several excuses given for having to kill a fish, none of which are true.
You Don't Need To Kill The Fish!
- The fish has swallowed the hook and will die anyway.
Not true, lure caught fish are always mouth-hooked easily removable. Furthermore, we use plated nickel, steel or bronze hooks for use with live or dead bait. These hooks, by virtue of their material make-up are designed to rust away very quickly in salt water. If one has been swallowed it will not normally effect the fish any as it will be gone, usually within 48 hours. If in fact the fish does indeed die at some point after release, a shark will no doubt find it, leaving one less healthy live one it needs to kill.
- The fish has thrown up his stomach (billfish), he's a goner!
Not true, billfish (Marlin & Sailfish) do this naturally in the wild to shake out fish that are stuck sideways etc. They re-ingest their stomach, no harm done. Smaller species, brought up from the deep too quickly, sometimes have a balloon-like object coming out of its mouth. This is called a swim bladder and it regulates the amount of oxygen the fish needs to keep at certain depths. Simply poke a hole in the bladder and release the fish. It will heal very quickly, no harm done.
- I need this fish to feed my family.
Nonsense, there are way too many local anglers keeping everything they catch. Nobody here is starving for lack of fish and can pretty much get it free from someone they know, any time they like. Most of the time the reason they keep all their fish is to sell it, or give it away to impress their friends. You're paying for the trip ... they're your fish, impress your friends by telling them that you released your catch.
You Don't Need to Kill the Fish to Get A Mount
Need Many unscrupulous boat owners / Captains will tell you that you need to kill a fish to get a mount, then, charge you a "special filleting" cost, usually $20 usd to properly "skin" the fish. Once you leave, they toss the skin, pocket the 20 bucks and commercially sell the meat from the fish, or sometimes even throw it away, if it has been in the sun too long. Large fish skin mounts have long been too costly to make them a worthwhile business. Not even the bills from Marlin or Sailfish are necessary.
RELEASE ALL FISH YOU DO NOT INTEND TO PERSONALLY CONSUME. If you think you may have one of your fish mounted, get a photo and a length measurement on board, before tossing it overboard or filleting it and simply order one later on. Do not make a big deal about getting a measurement either, otherwise you'll be subject to pressure from the Captain to get the fish mounted from who knows who. Simply tell them the measurement is for your own interest only. Then, when you return, talk to us directly, never with any boat Captain or owner, as we are well established, can offer you the best pricing, and you can certainly get a hold of us a lot easier than a Captain or boat owner you don't know.
