Pacific Jack Crevalle

Pacific-Jack-Crevalle

The Pacific Jack Crevalle is the most common of all jacks, trevallys and similar, here in Los Cabos. It is a very strong fish, called "Toro" in this area, which is a Spanish word for "bull".

Description: Jack Crevalle are similar to most other jacks and trevallys in being heavily bodied, with steeply rounded heads. They are generally silver to dark gray above, with silver sides, and are covered in assorted black spots with a large black spot or patch on its upper gill cover. They may or may not have an additional dark spot on the pectoral fin. Average size is 5-10 pounds with fish between 15-20 pounds being considered large. The IGFA All-Tackle record is 39 pounds.

Fishing Techniques: Fishing techniques for jack crevalle are very similar for those used for roosterfish, as these two species have similar feeding habits, frequent the same types of waters and can even be seen traveling together. By boat: From a boat troll live caballitos, or mackeral (nothing bigger) along sandy shorelines. Jack crevalle also like to hang out in the corners of bays and around rocky points. Use circle hooks and set the hook after a very short run with the bait as these fish pretty much inhale their prey. You can also cast top water lures such as "Klassic Poppers" and "Rangers" in amongst the same waters. Surf Fishing: There is nothing much better than a 2-3 oz. top-water lures cast over the tops of incoming waves as jacks chase they prey to the surface before striking. A medium to fast retrieve, keeping the lure at the surface will get their attention. Fly Fishing: Opportunities for fly fishing for jack crevalle are plentiful. The large ones are difficult to hook up from shore but it's not impossible. They tend to cruise the shallow shorelines rather than come in, in an "in-and-out" pattern like the roosterfish. The problem would be waves and swells. Smaller jacks will however come right into shallow bays with little or no swell and are easily target-able. Smaller fish will hit about any fly you can get near them but tend to prefer ones with larger heads and flies with some body to them. A sardine pattern would be the safest bet. Poppers work best with the larger fish.

Edibility & Cleaning: Their reputation for being very gamy precedes them. In fact, they are probably the worst eating fish around.
