Yellow Snapper

Yellow-Snapper

This smaller snapper is very beautiful, almost tropical looking. It is very aggressive towards lures, especially poppers and surface minnows and is a lot of fun to catch in the rocky areas. Their strike is fast and hard and they usually make their hit and return to the rocks before the angler is even aware of what happened. I have never encountered a Yellow snapper while fishing for Cubera or Colorado snappers, other than while fishing for smaller specimens in the rocks. Schools of smaller Yellow snapper can be seen drifting over large rocks and reef structure on incoming and outgoing swells at times and is quite a spectacular sight.

Description: Although the yellow snapper has a similar body shape to juvenile Cubera and Colorado snappers it is very easily distinguished by its overall body color which is usually yellow to orange with rosey red along the fringes and its fins being mainly yellow or orange. Its forehead slopes deeply with its snout being somewhat pointed. In most cases there is a noticeable dark bar on either side of its face and a blue streak under the eye, running across the cheek. The IGFA All-Tackle record is 12 pounds. An average yellow snapper would be 3 to 5 pounds, with a large one being 7 or 8 pounds.

Fishing Techniques: By Boat: Casting or trolling lures, such as shallow diving Rebels and Rapalas or poppers around rocky points and pinnacles. Smaller schooling fish are found deeper at bases of pinnacles and can be caught with cut bait or dead sardines. Surf Fishing: Cast Klassic poppers or plastics into tide pools amongst protruding rocks along the shoreline. Fly Fishing: Use 1/0 to 2/0 poppers or sardine/anchovy pattern streamers (3 inch) with a fairly short leader and a floating line, so that your fly line doesn't get caught up amongst the rocks.

Edibility & Cleaning: This snapper is excellent eating, especially baked whole. Fillet the larger fish over 5 pounds. If you are planning to prepare the fish whole, gut and gill fish upon capture.
